childish sketch

I am a happy man for one simple reason: I am surrounded by everything I need: my little boy, my waffle, the beagle and la chiquita. What else could a man ask for? I wish I'd own this tiny beach house though.

outside my imaginary window

Today I'm daydreaming about living here...daydreams of rolling hills
...in the land of rolling hills and round trees. Sadly, I'm not sure where "here" is. Do you know?

What are you daydreaming about?

obama and oatmeal

I enjoyed a wonderful dinner with President-Elect Barack Obama last night. Yes, you read correctly....I had dinner with Obama. We met on the south side of Chicago in a cozy little restaurant. We sat in a booth near the back. Barack was just as charming as I thought he would be. We talked about all kinds of things...the economy, Michelle and the girls...art blogs. I told him I couldn't wait to post about our dinner this morning.

Near the end of the night the waiter brought over some sort of flaming dessert. I think it may have been bananas foster. A spark leaped over from it to Barack's collar, catching it on fire. He didn't notice, but I did. I alerted him before it was too late. In essence, I saved our future president. I'm a hero.

Too bad it was only in my dream. Instead of waking up a hero, I woke up to oatmeal and a very quiet North Carolina morning. I guess that's not too bad either.

suzanne and the technicolor dream

Partly the result of having cleaned out my closet over the weekend and realizing that I'm in dire need of some new clothes and partly the result of my obsession with this season's Project Runway, night before last my dreams took me on a shopping spree. While I'm sure I purchased a lot more with my dream credit card, I woke up distinctly remembering two dresses and their price tags. Darn, I wish there was a way to bring clothes from the dream world to the real world. If only I could sew...

wishful thinking

Today I had an epiphany. Taking a cue from the classic line in Field of Dreams... "If you build it, he will come"... I've developed my own "mantra": "If you draw it, it will come." In this case "it" is an Eames Molded Plastic Side Chair...a chair I loooooove. Ahhh...

If this type of wishful thinking works for Kevin Costner, surely it should work for me. Shouldn't it?!?

rock tumbler

Strangely, this image popped into my mind last night as I was struggling to fall asleep. It appeared from nowhere and insisted on staying around until I drifted off. I figured I'd take the hint and jot it down today, along with a little haiku.

a mouse by any other name would smell sweet

I've not been feeling like myself for sometime now. First it was allergies. If it doesn't rain soon, I may just die. Stay tuned for that. Then it's been THE WORST COLD EVER...ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit....but truly, its been bad.

Let me tell just how bad...

Friday night, Edgar went out and came back with a rose. Now, this alone is unusual....Edgar isn't exactly the type of guy to give flowers, but, that's another story. When he gave me the flower, rather than recognizing the rose as a rose, my heavily sedated, hallucinating, fevered self thought he had given me a rubber mouse on a stick! Yes, you read correctly, a rubber mouse on a stick.Sure the room was dark and yes, I do have rubber mice on my mind anyway (more details are coming...I promise), but really, is this normal or a sign of THE WORST COLD EVER?

dream series no. 3

Last night I dreamt that Edgar gave me a Shar Pei as a present. I decided to name it Boxter, not because it came in a box, but because it was shaped like one.

i've reached a whole new low

a.k.a. creativity takes many forms and/or i've got entirely too much time on my hands

Ok, this is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever posted. In fact, I can't believe I'm doing this. Yikes!!!!! But, hey, what good is a blog if it isn't for embarrassing one's self. Last night I dreamt that "The Bachelor,” Lieutenant Andy Baldwin, M.D, asked me to marry him. While I was overjoyed, Andy later regretted his decision.

This morning I was going to illustrate this dream, but I needed a photo reference. When I found one I decided to put down my pen, play around and allow Andy to propose to yours truly...digitally. Here's the result.

Now, I'm off to hide in a hole.

where's joseph when I need him?

As I mentioned yesterday, I just love when Jana Bouc illustrates her dreams! Jana must have the most vivid imagination as her dreams are always great. I know that I'd wondered before how she could remember her dreams to put them down on paper and my question was answered when Jana explained that she kept a AM/PM sketchbook that she draws in first thing in the morning and at night before she goes to bed.

Well the last few days I've been thinking about my dreams when I wake up and finally, this morning, decided to hop out of bed, grab my sketchbook and hop back into bed before the dream escaped my mind. This dream is completely random...but, hey, that is the fun of it to me.

"Backseat Driving"

In three instances I was a backseat driver: first with Mindy (my best friend growing up), second with Shawn Woody (the first boy I ever kissed...in kindergarten on top of the head) and third with Oscar (Edgar's brother). In each instance I was fussing at them for driving too fast near a crosswalk with children. Oscar was the only one to get angry with me.

Is it a coincidence that all their names include 5 letters? I think not.
