storytelling magazine - call for entries

I want to pass the word along about a terrific illustration opportunity... Storytelling Magazine, a nationally distributed publication for people who are interested in listening and telling stories, commissions different artists to illustrate each issue's COVER. Currently, the art director for the magazine, Betsy Austin (who, I might add, also happens to be my sister), is looking for new artists interested in submitting samples of their work for consideration.

For more details check out this post over at Illustration Friday. And please, if you have any questions I can answer, feel free to ask.

I was lucky enough to be able to work on the latest issue and illustrate the "Spanish Moss Legend" by Mary Gene Cotten.

IF: grow

My submission for this week's Illustration Friday topic "grow." Initially my idea was to create a sweet image of a growing pregnant belly, but my hand had other ideas and this is what turned out!

IF: polar

As a toddler, I was a big fan of nursery rhymes. As a twenty-something, I still am. Not only are they fun to say, but they also convey such great imagery. For this week's Illustration Friday topic, I decided to illustrate "polar" by looking at the "polar opposites" of Jack Sprat and his wife.

This week's Illustration Friday topic took me back to junior high.
Need I say more?

For this week's Illustration Friday topic I decided to "spy" a few things from my studio.

IF: sprout

This week's Illustration Friday topic "sprout" automatically brought to mind "blossom" which, in turn, made me think of puberty. I was definitely a late bloomer. In fact, I'm not altogether sure that I ever bloomed! I do know, however, that I spent years in front of the mirror hoping and praying that I would one day "sprout" some breasts! As embarassing as this revelation is (blush, blush), it was too perfect to pass up as an illustration challenge!

Illustration Friday: Play

Yesterday I spent a few minutes trying to capture the essence of two little boys I babysit. It is difficult because they move so often. At least in life drawing classes they give you 30 seconds to draw a gesture...I'm lucky to get 10 seconds with these little guys! Anyway, I had planned on not sharing this attempt until I saw that Illustration Friday's topic for the week is "play." In a way I guess this sketch really hits on play as it is all about movement.
