Scattered thoughout many of my sketchbooks are images of hands. There is a reason for this. As a little girl I would always draw people with their hands in their pockets. I knew I couldn't draw hands well, so rather than make an attempt and ruin a drawing, I'd just hide the hands altogether. This was until a very talented watercolor artist, Barbara Timberman, took an interest in me and explained that while a hand is one of the most difficult things to draw, it is also one of the best things to practice drawing. This advice has stayed with me and to this day I continue to practice drawing hands. Thank you Ms. Timberman for taking that special interest in me.

Suzanne, I often use that same trick! And because I mostly draw childrens charachters you can always find an excuse to hide the hands (often behind their back or in pockets). This sketch is amazing, it is perfect. I am going to start trying to draw them. It's the only way to ge over the fear, I guess. You are an inspiration.
My sketchbooks are sort of the same way, except with feet instead of hands. I seem to draw them a lot, mostly because even if I have nothing else to draw, I still have my feet. Perhaps I should take some inspiration from your lovely hand sketch and branch out some.

However, now that I think about it, you probably ask this because my hand looks like a man...wow, such a beautiful manicure! Claire: I'm amazed you draw feet...I think they are even more difficult than hands!
Great advice, in fact hands are now one of my favourites too. I remember when I was young a friend showed me her drawing and the woman's hands were like a V with a thumb sticking out as if the fingers were stiff and straight lined up behind each other (can't explain this very well!) Anyway, I did hands like that for years!
