We were in Verizon Wireless for around an hour and a half last night; enough time for me to do these two sketches, plus a few more if I had had the energy. I can't imagine what it would be like to work in this type of environment. Not only did it seem stressful last night, but I also find it extremely sterile, I was struggling to find things to draw. Danny Gregory is so right when he writes in The Creative License "when drawing nature you discover how bland and uniform are man's creations. Only God can make a tree. Would you rather draw a person or their car? A skyscraper or a tree? A computer or an apple?" From my experience at Verizon, I know I'd much rather draw a tree than a cell phone.

Hey, that's a great quote! The things created for practicality are always "bland and uniform, but mankind has made a lot of beautiful things. Think of things man created with beauty and posterity in mind: the Eifel Tower, the Sistine Chapel, The great Cathedrals and Castles. Anyway, the link for Danny Gregory doesn't work! :)
What a GREAT composition and the sketches are terrific! I so agree -- I'd rather sketch a flower any time! (people are still too difficult!) LOL

Ah, great sketches of every day life, Suzanne. I like the guy on the phone in the top left corner. So, yeah, drawing nature is probably more inspiring, and in a way, elevating... but i will contend that some cars are cool to draw :-)
Cool post. Your sketches are fab and your words (along with Danny's) thought provoking. For me it's too difficult to call - as somebody who mostly draws inanimate manmade objects!
France- It's funny that you should say that because I thought about you as I was typing Danny's quote. You definitely elevate cars to a level that totally holds its own against nature.
Thanks for the interesting writing as well as the pics. I love the way you end with the Eclipse package--it's so perfect. That was so kind of you to tell the guy not to stress over making you wait 45 minutes! I hope he gave you what you needed.
The "Eclipse" sketch is good. When all else fails, draw something that is in your pockets or purse!
