i've got a question for you
I love Gregory Stock's The Book of Questions. Despite the fact that I first got the book over a decade ago, it is still something I like to flip through whenever I come across it. That being said, this morning I came across it...but this time with new eyes, drawing eyes.
Many of the questions lend themselves to being illustrated, so this is something I've decided to do on occasion. I'd also love your answers.
So, here goes, Illustrated Question #1: "If you could wake up tomorrow having gained one ability or quality, what would it be?" My answer: the ability to speak a foreign language (I have no skills). My mom's response was more fun to illustrate, however. What's your answer?

i wish i could fly :)
I'd love to be a ballet dancer. Maybe that is why I love sketching them so much.
Shirley
hmm - to draw as well as you do!
You know, I'm not sure I *would* like to wake up having magically gained the ability to do the things I'd love to do, because I'm addicted to learning! I love the process of acquiring new skills, of feeling myself getting better at them each time I practice. All the things I enjoy doing or have ever tried to learn (art, languages, crochet/knitting, swimming, playing the harmonica) I would love to be able to do *better*, but only because they're things I enjoy doing, so by practising I am doing them anyway.
OK, I've thought of one: I think it would be a mind-opening experience to wake up fluent in Japanese. But wishing it would mean that I had given up on the idea of ever making the time to learn it for real. And that makes me sad!
Sorry to give such a long-winded answer. Your illustration is very sweet. :-)
I'd like to be able to play a musical instrument -- I think maybe the flute...
I´m into the music theme too. I´d like to be able to play the guitar properly and write incredible songs.
Great question -- and i wonder how you would have illustrated the mastering of a foreign language!!
Personally, i would have to say: the ability to use color. I don't have the first clue about it, and feel like a newborn whenever i handle brushes (which is rare enough not to be a daily frustration)!!
I'll swap my native French language for your use of color any day. :-)
I would love to wake up with the puppeteering ability of Jim Henson! I love puppets and performing, but the skills come so slowly with no real puppet manipulation lessons/workshops available around here! I'm constantly teaching myself this art by practicing in front of the mirror in my bathroom while my kids are immensely entertained. If I woke up with this ability than I would not have to spend so much time in the bathroom! And I could spend more time entertaining (and teaching) more kids with puppets! Great question! Thanks!
You have the BEST blog! Love the drawings.
I love your drawing! It's so sweet. Does it resemble your mom? I love the question too. For me I think it would be sing. Great question and great idea to illustrate from those questions. I bet that book is great for around the dinner table conversations!
That's funny, 'cause I always say that what I'd want to be able to do is to be able to understand and speak ANY language. I think that'd be a really awesome thing to do. :) Not sure how I'd draw that. :)
This is an adorable little drawing! That is a tricky question.I would need many days to wake up to...on one of the many days I would like to be a fairy, on another I would love to be a rockstar, then I would also like to be on stage receiving an oscar for actress of the year, not forgetting reaching no 1 in ATP women tennis. I definitely would also like to be the Dalai Lama for a while...
Great post!

Oh it is so great hearing all of your wishes. I wish they would all come true! It's interesting that most of you would chose a new artistic talent. Hmmm.
I saw this post yesterday and thought I'd go away and have a think about the question you posed.
It's really diffiuclt - I think I'm with you on this. I would love to speak another language. I think if English is your first languauge you can be pretty lazy. You can usually get by, but we also miss out.
I think I would really like to be able to speak in public. I think that would be my main thing. By public I mean speak in front of more than, say, two people!
Ooh and of course portraits! I'd like to have that ability.
great post Suzanne. I must get that book!!
What a FUN sounding book -- question -- project! I need to go find the book for myself. I love the illustration of your mom ice skating (and think that is just a fantastic answer!)
Personally, I'd want to be able to sing -- really sing! But I'd have to be able to switch between opera and Janis Joplin abilities at will...
:-D
I would want to be fearless.
And PLEASE don't say you have no skills; I am GREEN with envy of your drawings, although I am ALSO enjoying them to the fullest - and it actually inspired me to start drawing again!
Thank you!
