perceiving and communicating

The drawing class I am teaching this semester is titled Perception and Communication. It is named this way as it is vital that designers not only be able to dream up wonderful ideas, but also be able to communicate them on paper. Right now my students are in the middle of a project where they are documenting several buildings on campus. They must develop perspectives filled with entourage...people, cars, plants, furniture, trash recepticles...you name it. Today, we spent part of the class period drawing one another in 60-second and 30-second poses in an effort to develop quick, effective methods of drawing the "scale figures" that will fill our spaces.

I touched up the first group digitally with the Wacom Tablet Edgar got me for Christmas. I've only started trying to work with it this week and it's taking a little getting used to...

What a fabulous exercise and great gesture drawings. I wish I could get people to stand still for 30-60 seconds! I have so many people on the sidewalks, but everyone is in constant movement, even if waiting for the bus!

Considering how you used markers, soon you'll be a master with the tablet. (I have a complete set of copic markers almost forgotten since I started with the tablet. (This Christmas Santa brought me a Cintiq http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ueHdyFUhMQ, yes!!!) Great, great sketches, tienes la mano dulce (we say in Spain)

Can I just say that the depth of your talent is simply amazing? How do you do this? It looks like it just comes out of your hand perfectly -- no messing with proportions, or where things should go -- they just end up in exactly the right spot. You are brilliant!

I feel so ambivalent toward quick, gesture drawings: on the one hand, I love what they teach you about commiting a pose to memory and how to catch nuances that define one's subject; on the other hand, I want to pull out my hair and scream because usually the subjects move too quickly for me to memorize the pose to draw it. LOL!

I love your sketches, Suzanne! I feel silly for not knowing what a Wacom Tablet is, so thanks for the link...I'll look it up. :)

These are terrific. I love drawings that are collections of things and there's nothing better to collect on paper than people, I think!

this is a great exercise for all ages Suzanne...
I have found that younger children as well as art students enjoy the process and that (usually) the shorter the time the better the sketch :)
