catch it while you can
I'm not sure if it's the cold weather, or the caffeine from the soft drink I had earlier, or the encouraging conversation I enjoyed with my dinner buddy, or the quick trip to the magazine section of Barnes and Noble afterward...but I feel totally alive tonight with creative energy!!!! What an elusive drug it is. Please cross your fingers that it lasts....

What a fun idea. I used to draw random people at school in the courtyard. I havnt done that in a long time.
I am loving all those folks you put on the Hot Seat! Ms. Beret is too cute!
I always get creative energy at like 2 am, when it's too dark to draw outside and I'm supposed to be going to sleep.

Long ago my wife and I came up with a word that describes that energetic, creative feeling that puts butterflies in your stomach and seems to come out of nowhere -- "creely" -- as in, "I'm feeling creely this morning," (although they usually come at night with me). Great sketch too!

Very nice! I only just discovered your blog site via Don Smith's "Creative Endeavors" site.
I used to draw/sketch quite a bit when I was a young man, but I somehow moved away from it in my later years. I'm not really sure why, because sometimes it still haunts me. But regardless of my practices, I continue to appreciate art that's done by others!
And I really like this sketch you've done here, and I like your "Hot Seat" concept. Do you draw your subjects while they sit, or do you draw from memory, or by later referencing some captured image?
I know I'm looking forward to visiting your site often to see what you come up with next. Nice work!

I just realized I never answered your question. I draw everyone from life. I've never been very good at drawing from photos--or memory for that matter. Plus, there's a nice level of "pressure" that comes from drawing on the spot :)
Hi SUzanne, do these people ever "catch" you drawing them? Do you make an effort to pretend like you're just scribbling, or something? I tend to draw people on the train, and it seems like some of them can sense what's going on. Maybe I'm staring too hard :-) Or maybe it just doesn't matter.
When I was little I had this book about a little goat that went around counting all the other animals. They would go, "Oh, no! He counted you, too!"
In the end, his skill turned out to be quite useful, but I may have been left with the notion that the counting (read: drawing) actually was a naughty thing to do ;-)

Eva-- Thanks for the question. I like to think I've perfected the 'art' of drawing incognito :) I hate for people to know that I'm drawing so as soon as I feel as though someone has a suspicion I'll stop mid-stroke and move on to someone else. I also try to find subjects that are involved in some activity...reading, sleeping, conversation. That makes things a little easier.
