You've heard of speed dating? Well this is the results of speed sketching...a fun exercise undertaken by my drawing class last week. In an effort to get students to loosen up in their new sketchbooks, I had everyone lay 3 objects out on their desk. They drew these objects until I called 'time'...at which point they left their sketchbook and traveled to another student's desk to pick up on the drawing where the previous sketcher left off. After 5 or 6 more switches students were able to go back to their own desks and see the results of the collaboration.
I love what resulted in my own sketchbook! I'm intrigued by how the style of the first drawer, influenced the sketches of others. For instance, if someone begin in a tight and precise manner, all the subsequent drawings in that book would be tight and precise.
I later decided to add watercolors (which I haven't used in forever!) to the sketch in preparation for a demo I did the medium this morning. Stay tuned for more on this.

What a great exercise! I love the collaboration and while reading I was thinking "how strange the drawing above looks like it was done by one person" then I read how the group stayed with the style that started it. Pretty neat. Was that intended or just happened that way?

how groovy is this! i think normally i'd flip out under the pressure, but maybe the time limit would contain my panic. this would be a fun game to play solo - sticking a few objects devant moi and giving myself only a minute or two to render them into a sketchy mess.

Very fun, Suzanne. I don't know what the class is, but I sometimes wish we had little restorative fun exercises like this in my classes.
I may have to get my kids to try this exercise! Not as much fun with just the 3 of us, but still interesting. :)

Excellent idea, this speed sketching thing. How much time did you give everyone at each spot? Curious also as to your comment about someone drawing in a tight manner. Does that mean they continued that process in every subsequent sketch, or did other artists follow in that artist's style after seeing what he/she was doing?
Krista---Thanks for the question. Everyone was given between 3 and 5 minutes and the trend seemed to be that they picked up the style of the subsequent sketch.
