I think it is safe to say that there are certain pressures for household perfection that come along with being a member of the interior design profession. Luckily for Edgar and me, we're at an income level that prevents us from being fully-consumed by this pressure. If we were...well...that might make things a little difficult. As it stands now, however, we're very content with the collection of hand-me-downs, roadside finds and "slightly-damaged" goods that fill our house. They all have meaning to us...which I feel trumps beautiful tchotchkes and Persian rugs any day.
In fact, I'll say it...I love our home...as simple as it is. It's cozy and eclectic, warm and inviting, occasionally a little messy (in the I've got too many projects going on kind of way), always filled with music, good smells, cute dogs and lots of love...this is all I need.

Each time I have been to your house (and your previous apartment as well) I was always in love with the way it was decorated.
And you said it...good music...good smells...good food...good people. What else do you need to make it a home?
I tell people, if it makes you happy, then it is good design (to an extent). And I took the Eames' house as inspiration- if they can have collections and clutter and well-used furniture, then I can too.
I don't think it's so much the object, whether new or picked out of a dumpster, but rather what you do with it that makes it special. I, myself, subscribe to the Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy...many things in our house are a bit battered, well-used, well-loved.

I love this post. Right on, Suzanne. Having taste doesn't mean needing expensive stuff (just like, as we all know, having tons of money doesn't afford most people taste!!!).

I've always thought it's better to have things you love than things that are considered good design - after all what is considered good design this year might be considered a dangerous faux pas the next!

oh, and your description of your home resonates precisely with ours--literally every piece of furniture has a story behind it--whether it be belonging to a loved one or residing in our childhood homes or being a gift from an astute friend...all adding up to a very rich living environment!

Ha, wonderful. Sounds kinda like our house (only add three kids in the mix). I love this sketch -- especially the pencil indicating shadow, nice contrast to the pen.
