Florida was a success. And while I'm glad to be back home [and out of the air...speaking of jitters], the symposium presented a wonderful opportunity to compare notes with others interested in using creative talents in and out of the classroom for greater causes. The conference revolved around a central question:
What are your thoughts? Especially now, with the crisis in Haiti. What can we, as artists and designers, do? What are some interesting projects you've heard of as of late?

Art used for 'Social Justice' is called PROPAGANDA, it's been around for a long time actually.

Interesting point Elaine, though I guess I'm not describing the type of social justice that belongs in quotations. My question is how can we do the most good with the talents we've been given?

I have also used my passion for art to promote healthy eating to children. In a previous job, I ran a poster campaign with UK schools that asked children to draw posters encouraging other children to eat fish because it was good for them. Amazingly, I received 26,000 entries! so that was 26,000 children thinking about healthy eating. It was a brilliant campaign and a great example of how art can be used for good things.
well I love the idea of the Urban Sketchers where they did a poster to raise money and awareness.
I also like the idea of anyone of us giving some of our artwork for this cause or making a statement on your blog with a link to an organization you think is making a difference there.
Great sketch! I haven't heard of any sketch auction going towards helping Haiti - Please let us know! I would love to donate a painting. Dominique is right, The Urban sketchers have created a universal poster (in all languages) for artist to post up, ran by artist Gabi Campanario. It has the direct number for the American Red Cross. Yes, posters, I think, for sale and soliciting donations. And exhibits that charge a donation, perhaps combined with music, poetry, and some elegant hors doeurves. And, of course, outside of disasters, going into schools in less-developed places and helping kids with self-expression -- or even going into refugee camps, etc. and helping kids work through trauma by means of art. Encouraging local art cooperatives of marginalized people or less-developed countries, to sell their goods for money. Just off the top of my head.
