camera collection : take three

dejua model d-100

I don't know about you, but I a chronic project-starter. I love coming up with ideas! In fact, I consider this is my strongest skill as a designer and teacher. Following through with the ideas....well, that tends to a different story. Note that I didn't say I'm a chronic project-finisher. It's my Achilles' heel (should I be sharing this?) and something I intend to work on (wait, was that another project I just started?!?).

Anyway, this is all to say that this camera/wallpaper project has been a different experience for me. I drew the first of the cameras way back in July. And though I've been slow in my process, it is a project I enjoy more and more with time. Rather than getting bored or in a hurry to finish, it's something I actually like lingering on. It's strange, but very gratifying.

How about you? Are you a project-starter?
Do you enjoy the process or the results more?

I am always starting projects or thinking of them. Sometimes thinking of them and telling someone about it makes me think that I've accomplished it! I can imagine the satisfaction of drawing a camera though...all of the cool details and little knobs. I love sketching people too though and all of the different kinds of lines involved. I love both ways in other words...the ideas that can just live in my mind and the process.

Oh my you sound exactly like me. I love starting new projects, but the rest somebody else can do! I have even a hard time to finish books, because my mind skipped to some other interest. Which leads to stacks and stacks of started books on my night stand.

But while you are a designer, I'm an engineer, I should be the one who pulls the project through... Damn it, I knew I studied the wrong thing ;-)

Lovely drawings. I prefer photography over drawing, I just never have the patience to learn to draw. Whoops

Am definitely a starter and not a finisher. Ugh. Loving your camera project!

I have so many thing rattling around my head that sometimes I think it's going to burst. I had some health issues recently which you think would slow me down but no, the mind is still whizzing. If I had to say which, it'd be the prep work, more than the finished product that I enjoy. If I spend too much time on a project I lose interest by the time it's finished.

Love the colors in these drawings! Could definitely see them as wall paper.

I too like to start projects and then mooove on. Sometimes wish I had a different time dimension I could step into for each project. But I like your strategy of taking the process in gradual steps and enjoying it more that way.

this color combo is 1950s-motel-fabulous! as for the process/results issue, well, i love both, but connecting the two is challenging. once in a while i'll get a real rush from taking something from start to completion but it has to be a really small, intense timeframe. outside of that, i love either generating ideas or being a workerbee and getting to the finish line. one or the other. they satisfy totally different needs. great question!

Thomas Edison said, "Invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration." I think he could have been talking about art, too, if you ask me.

The color palette you've chosen for these clean little drawings is awesome. I can't wait to see how it all comes together!

It was as though I'm reading my own thoughts! I am a project-starter too! and I have millions of projects half-done...well, maybe not millions...but you get the picture!
Let me know if you find a solution to that! :)

By the way, love the sketch...as always!

Great post--I was a chronic starter, but last year I cleared out my studio and started to get more focused, which was an entirely new thing and felt great! Now when I have an idea, I dump it in my "ideas" journal, and get to it when I can--or sometimes never! Now I can work on the things I really care about the most, and give them more time.

haha, I can so identify with this. I am also a chronic project starter, and what's more, I also have a half dozen ideas that are still waiting to be started! Wonder if its boredom that sets in that makes me quit sometimes? Or lack of planning in the first place?

Anyway, your camera sketches are great!

LOVE those cameras.

Yes, I too am a chronic project starter. All those projects keep me awake at night. But it's my favourite thing - thinking up all those new things I'm gonna do. One day.
