I haven't been drawing worth a flip these last few days. I got a new sketchbook and unlike all the one's I've had in the past that were filled with super cheap bond paper, this one has thick, gritty pages. Lovely pages...perhaps they have jinxed me as I feel I have to take myself a little more seriously on them. So, this explains the lack of posts over the past few days.
This image is one I drew a while back, in a cheap sketchbook. It is based on an image I saw in Veer. I enjoyed drawing it because the angle of the face really posed the challenge of drawing what I saw and not what I thought I saw.

I have exactly the same problem. My latest journal has a nice and heavy paper, I am too often afraid to draw in it. Therefore, I keep a second journal made with very cheap paper to 'warm up' and become more confident.

Wow this drawing is totally amazing Suzanne. I know exactly what you (and Laurent) mean about the sketchbook issue. I'm the same, but I find it happens with all materials. I bought (a little while back) some expensive fountain pen and inks. I have never used them - I'm too afraid too. I'm 'keeping them for best'. So I use cheap ballpoints which I can be as carefree as I like with! Brilliant drawing!

I know what you mean with the sketchbooks--I love paper and have several pads of assorted pastel, watercolor, and drawing paper that I'm afraid to use because I'll "waste" it. Never mind that the entire purpose of the stuff is to be used.
I absolutely love this, it makes me want to throw my head back and laugh along! The loose strokes you've used here are just so perfect for this image.

I got over the good sketchbook fear a while ago, and I can't remember exactly how. Oh, I know what it was---since I do watercolor and wash sketches a lot, I HAD to get good paper because anything else buckled and made my images look bad. So that solved the question for me. It was me or the cheap paper. I chose me.

Wonderful! Maybe he's laughing at all of our silliness about our precious sketchbooks! I've been agonizing about buying an expensive (real) watercolor sketchbook to bring with me to Mexico in 2 weeks, with that same fear that I won't want to mess it up. I like what Laura said. It gives me courage. I have half a dozen sketchbooks going at once and it's kind of dysfunctional. I pick the one I'm going to use based on the size, format, quality of paper and how "good" the drawing might turn out... Erck! When I want to find a recent sketch I have to hunt through all of them. I'm going to follow Laura's lead and get a good one becuase trying to do wet in wet watercolor on bad paper just doesn't work.
Gosh, he seems to be moving. I really like this. And it's funny, i just wrote on my blog about the pressure we sometimes feel to draw something nice just because we bought "expensive" material. It used to paralyze me, but since discovering Danny Gregory, i have learned to let go and tackle whatever, wherever.
It's as if sometimes we try to sabotage our own creativity, or "flow".
It's crazy how paralyzing it can be - this fear of messing up, making a mistake, not being good enough. I'm still struggling to get over it with my sketchbooks. It's easier for me with a spiral bound sketch pad (even with nice paper) though because you can just rip out the offending drawing and throw it away ;)
BTW, still working on my version of the drawing exercise (pen pod) - got distracted by my lensbaby but now am down to working on the final four. Such fun!
