pen|pod

In the first year drawing class I am teaching this semester, the students' first assignment is very similar to that done by Mithi at the London Met. Using a pen lid and an okra pod as a starting point, each student was asked to generate a series of sketches (220 in all) capturing the essence of their subjects and then manipulate them using the principles of design. The basis of this experiment is to show how drawing and design are one in the same.

While the students were working at their desks, the other professors and I worked at generating our own set of drawings. These are my final four. The next step in the students' projects is to implement color into their final four images and submit them to Crypton Fabric's Loominary Competition. I'm really excited to see where this goes.

Great design work - I expected no less though, especially after seeing your stationery. So is this a new thing - the teaching?? I don't remember reading about it before (maybe I did - my short term memory is awful!), is this a direction you want to go in? Or just one of a few directions?! Like to hear more about it.

I didn't even know you were teaching a class this semester. How cool is that. The topic seems stimulating too. Can i audit the class? :-)

very cool. I had a case of insomnia last night and started working on a set. I'm down to eight at this point. When I get to four I'll post at mixed bag - probably tomorrow. Thanks for the info!

i would love to be in your class! i would love to be in any class.

they do have classes for part-timers at colleges around here but they are expensive and not very imaginative like you seem to be.

but the local council is having a coupla free photography workshops in February so i enrolled in these.

keep up the good stuff!

Thanks for all the inquiries regarding my teaching. I just started teaching this semester at UNC-G and so far, it has been a nice experience. I'll give more details later, as the semester moves forward.

Heather- I can't wait to see what you come up with! I'm thinking of ways now that I can use this process more.

Beautiful decorative work ... what a great idea too, I might just hop in and try something similar myself. Love the graphic deco look to these.

This looks like so much fun to do and I'd like to try it. I'd love to have more of the directions and know what implements you used (markers? india ink and brush?) Your students are lucky to have you for a teacher. DO you design your own curriculum?

Hi Jana-
Thanks as always for your feedback and questions. I am team teaching this semester, so I work with the others, who are more experienced, to design the curriculum. It is exciting, however, as they really encourage my input. So, when we needed a first project I was able to take what I had seen Mithi do as a starting point for what we could try to achieve in our class. For a better set of directions, try referring to Mithi's site. I've provided a link in my text. She is very thorough in her explanation and I think you'll enjoy seeing her outcome as well.
