I've determined that of all the subjects one can draw, the Eames Molded Plywood Chair might just be the hardest. Night before last, after watching me struggle to get anything on the page for nearly 30 minutes, Edgar challenged me to a draw-off. It's his assertion that the best way to draw the chair is to break it down to cubes in perspective. I, on the other hand, feel a careful observation of the contours and negative space is the way to go. (Uh yeah, we're nerds...) I'll leave the decision of the winner up to you :)

Have to say -- they're both excellent -- but I do like yours better (sorry Edgar!). I think it may partially due to the really tough angle that Edgar's chair is drawn from -- but also, the proportions on yours seem to totally line up for me. What I love is that I can also see your placement lines -- which is fascinating to me because it helps me to further break down and refine my own drawing/seeing techniques. Good job both of you!
I think yours is better ;)But they are almost different styles...so it could be a tie...
I have to tell you that I started getting spam in my inbox from a Dr. Suzanne.
That makes me laugh...
They are both great but please tell Edgar sorry but you won the draw-off :)
Eeeek...you all are going to cause me to get a divorce! Vote Edgar! and quick!
Gosh I love your blog. You've inspired and re-energized me to get back to the fun part of sketching and blogging instead of my laborious oil painting process posts I've been stuck in lately. I'm supposed to be finishing up at work and going home but got lost in your blog and stayed late at work. Jana
They are both awesome, but I think I'd tend to draw the chair as you did :)
Ok, hide my response from Edgar because I, too, like yours better. :}
ohh I see! you traitors!!! thanks for the honesty... i know she rocks!
Both of you did wonderfully! I am not voting for either as I hate to start a matrimonial warfare.
Sorry, Edgar, but I'm going with Suzanne's too. But, I do think that you are the best at wood work!
Edgar, I have to say I was staggered by your drawing! Whilst Suzanne's has the technical edge, yours brings out the personality of the chair - you show it's sensitivity and coursge, oh and another thing .. sometimes men have to stick together, no matter what!
thanks stephen for backing up my crappy sketch. And yes we have to stick together!
i just wanted to say that it was nice to finally meet you yesterday! I check your blog everyday =]
Lol! Just been over to your site... I'm guessing you can hold your own! What a fantastic and talented couple. You both have my utter respect :-) (Has Suzanne made you anything out of wood? Hm?? )
Thanks Kimber! I felt a bit stalkerish but had to say "hi!"
Hahahaha Stephen...point well taken :)
I'm not stupid enough to weigh in on a draw-off between newlyweds. Ask me again in 6 months, tho. ;-)
If you're nerds, then there's more of us around than you'd think.
I'm thinking, wistfully, wouldn't a whole set of Eames chairs (any model) be great. Sigh. Great sketches, both of you!
I think yours looks technically better, but Edgar's seems to have its own character. It looks like it belongs in a roald dahl-esque story about school children.
can we mix the styles? :P
I'd say it's a draw :)
(sorry couldn't resist!)
Jan
You win! Your chair is prettier.
I agree with you!
